Attend a virtual or in-person community meeting to help shape the future of the city’s efforts to improve recycling and composting programs while reducing landfill waste.
We’re looking for ideas and input from the community. This could include suggestions for creating more places for compost or recycling, implementing programs to reuse and repair items, and adding more locations for hazardous waste drop-off.
Your actions can help Berkeley get closer to zero landfill waste. Reduce the amount you buy or shop secondhand. Choose local, reusable items with minimal packaging. By making conscious changes in your consumer choices, you can help reduce waste and contribute to a healthier environment.

Join to listen to what people said in the spring survey and workshops. You will also see a draft of the plan’s guiding principles, and discuss new ideas for policies, programs, and infrastructure in Berkeley.

Reducing landfill waste in Berkeley
The City of Berkeley is developing the Zero Waste Strategic Plan to help achieve our vision of zero waste sent to landfills. Share your input in this process to ensure that the plan aligns with your needs.
You can start making a difference in reducing waste today. Shop wisely by buying only what you need and buying local or second-hand items when possible. Choose long-lasting products that that are repairable and avoid single-use or disposable items. Bring your reusable containers and bags to reduce waste.
Follow best practices to correctly recycle and compost your items. Put your recyclable items directly in the can rather than bagging them, as plastic bags are not recyclable. Compost food scraps instead of discarding them in the trash. Your actions can have a meaningful impact.
