Department of State Services (DSS), yesterday, canvassed improved approaches to security challenges.

The Director-General, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, represented by Director, Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said the dynamics of security threats require collaborative efforts, adding that everyone has a role to play in ensuring national security.

Speaking at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Distinguished Lecture Series, themed, ‘Managing National Security and Law Enforcement Intelligence in a Globalised World’ in Lagos, the secret police sought  greater collaboration with the institute for intelligence management to promote better threat management in the country.

“The new model of security administration is hinged on collaboration, and having such an institute that carries out research and gives theoretical input, is paramount to stakeholders in the field”, he said.

Bichi pointed out that the global security landscape is marked by a complex web of interdependencies, adding that the ease by which information and resources could be mobilised across the world had been checked by non-state actors.

He regretted that technology, sometimes, is deployed negatively on social media for propaganda and yellow journalism at the detriment of national peace.

Bichi asserted that rising terrorism, farmer-herder clashes, boundary disputes, human trafficking, ethnic conflicts, fake news and related matters pose a great threat to Nigeria’s security.

While emphasising the relevance of intelligence in law enforcement and national security, he said that it is a critical element that unifies both national security and law enforcement efforts.

NIIA Director General, Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, re-echoed  that security is everyone’s business, urging synergy for sustainable results.

He noted that through national orientation and reorientation, citizens can confidently contribute to security through provision of intelligence.

“We need civic engagement that is built on the pillars of nationalism, patriotism and duty to the fatherland to promote everyone’s involvement and commitment to the security of the state,” he added.
