IN THE SPOTLIGHT this week is Lisa Lappin, restructuring and insolvency director at Baker Tilly Mooney Moore
What was your first job?
I worked for a high street fashion retail chain part-time from the age of 16 until I started my first full time job. I loved the bustle, the teamwork, camaraderie and helping customers – as well as the discount (which I still miss).
What qualifications do you have?
I have a law degree from Queen’s University in Belfast and passed the Joint Insolvency Examinations (JIEB), obtaining my Insolvency Practitioner License which allows me to take personal and corporate insolvency appointments. I was proud to win the Leonard Curtis Prize after completing the JIEB exams. Now, I am a member of and regulated by the Insolvency Practitioners Association and a member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals.
What do you attribute your success to?
I would say hard work (lots of revision) and being fortunate to train and work with individuals and teams who encouraged and supported me to develop my knowledge, qualifications, and experience.
How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?
A family person who is hard-working and fair but also with a sense of humour.
Who do you look up to in business?
Anyone combining their work and family life and striking an equilibrium between both.
How do you get the best out of people who work for you?
I try to encourage people to develop their own skills and path and then utilise these in their role. As business advisers, I think it’s important that we can understand the issues and be a part of creating the strategy or solutions.
If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?
To have a functioning Executive back in place to help businesses maximise their own potential and contribute to a more sustainable economic future for Northern Ireland. With our talented workforce and strong entrepreneurial culture, we could achieve a lot more with the support of a functioning Assembly and Executive.
What website or app could you not do without?
Probably Google as a starting point!
What was the last book you read?
The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel.
What car do you drive?
Hyundai Tucson.
Tell us something interesting about yourself
I always wanted to be an egyptologist and was able to visit the Cairo Museum and the Valley of the Kings to view artefacts and monuments first-hand, which was an amazing experience.
What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?
Trying to exercise and visiting places I haven’t been before.
