French brand appoints Chemena Kamali as Creative Director | Retail News France

Chloé, the esteemed French fashion label, has officially announced Chemena Kamali as its new Creative Director. Kamali’s first pre-collection is anticipated to grace the Parisian runways in January, followed by the unveiling of the fall-winter 2024 collection during the prestigious Paris Fashion Week in February.

Kamali’s appointment had been long anticipated, gaining momentum since Gabriela Hearst’s departure in July. Speculations had circulated about Kamali running a parallel studio at Chloé, preparing to assume the role of creative director.

Having graduated from Central St. Martins in London, Kamali initiated her career at Chloé as part of Phoebe Philo’s design team. She returned to Chloé in 2013, working under Clare Waight Keller. She also served as the women’s design director for Saint Laurent and worked as a consultant for the contemporary line Frame.

Expressing her deep connection with the brand, Kamali stated, “Chloé has always held a special place in my heart. It has been my passion since I first stepped through its doors more than 20 years ago. Returning feels natural and profoundly personal.”

Riccardo Bellini, the Chief Executive of Chloé’s parent company, Richemont, lauded Kamali as a “natural choice” for the house, praising her “creative talent, extensive experience, and unique connection to the brand’s legacy.”

This announcement coincided with another pivotal move in the fashion world: Alexander McQueen’s appointment of Seán McGirr to succeed Sarah Burton. Both these appointments underscore a prevailing trend among fashion executives, favouring lesser-known designers over high-profile names for leadership roles in distinguished fashion houses.
