The U.S. Small Business Administration has declared the flooding that followed a July 9 storm in Berks County a disaster.
That news comes the same week that the Federal Emergency Management Agency denied a request from Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro to issue a major disaster declaration in regards to the storm.
The SBA declaration will provide relief in the form of three types of low-interest disaster loans to those in Berks impacted by the flooding. They include:
• Business physical disaster loans — Loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property. Private nonprofit organizations are also eligible for the loans.
• Economic injury disaster loans — Working capital loans to help qualifying businesses and nonprofit organization meet ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster.
• Home disaster loans — Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including vehicles.
Details on how to apply for the loans will be posted at countyofberks.com.
The deadline to apply for the business physical damage and home loans is Nov. 27. The deadline to apply for economic impact loans is June 28.
