It has become a business hub where shiny glass office blocks stand side-by-side, overlooking the iconic turrets of Temple Meads just beyond the river. But, despite its close proximity to the station, Floating Harbour and major Bristol roads like Temple Way, Temple Quay was not always the commercial hub that it is today.
According to Bristol City Council it was an industrial area in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was largely covered by a railway goods shed by the mid 20th century. Decades later that structure was removed, and Bristol Development Corporation initiated a huge regeneration project during the 1990s.

Now a key part of the Bristol Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone, Temple Quay is home to large employers including HMRC, Homes England, Burges Salmon and Ovo Energy. As more housing is built in the area, other businesses have been attracted in recent years too – from trendy cafes and bakeries like Small Goods and Mokoko to big chains like Greggs and Sainsbury’s.
