Misericordia University Adds Business Economics Major to Academic Programming
Misericordia University has announced the addition of Business Economics to its list of academic programming for Fall 2024, which offers new academic opportunities with a range of professional applications. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will earn a bachelor of science degree in business economics.
“Economics is one of the fastest growing majors in the U.S.,” said Zhen Ma, Ph.D., associate professor of Business at Misericordia University. “The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates demand for economists is expected to grow at a rate of 5.7 percent through 2031, with a median annual wage of $105,630. This unique interdisciplinary major will open doors to more diverse career options for our students,” said Ma.
Misericordia’s Business Economics major is designed to empower students with a profound understanding of economics while equipping them with the essential skills to thrive in the modern business landscape. In this cutting-edge program, students will navigate critical concepts and fundamental principles in economics, honing their ability to articulate economic ideas with precision and impact. The innovative curriculum will foster critical and analytical thinking, enabling students to dissect complex economic concepts and navigate the intricate terrain of business. Furthermore, the new major emphasizes cultivating leadership and management skills, vital for addressing economic challenges in both corporate and community contexts. Through hands-on experience, students will learn how to drive positive change in their respective business settings while embodying ethical and socially responsible practices.
One of the cornerstones of this major is a deep dive into the intersection of economics and globalization. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, students will explore how global dynamics affect the business environment, equipping them with a keen awareness of economic issues on a global scale. An economics degree gives students a wide range of industries to pursue professionally outside of college.
Business Economics offers a transformative educational experience, preparing students to comprehend the intricate fabric of economics and be proactive leaders and stewards of ethical and socially responsible economic practices in the ever-evolving business world. Economists can work in industries such as business, banking, finance, law, government, and nongovernmental organizations.
“We are delighted to announce the inclusion of Business Economics among the expanding array of academic majors at Misericordia University. This addition aligns seamlessly with our overarching mission to enhance the academic opportunities available to our students, fostering enhanced career prospects upon their graduation from the institution,” James Pierson, J.D., CPA, dean of the College of Business.
The new major requires students to take business economics courses in Economics, Statistics, Management, Marketing, Finance, and Accounting. Additionally, the university is introducing three new courses for business economics majors. They are Intermediate Microeconomics, International Economics, and Introduction to Econometrics.
