(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 10 – Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti
met with German Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Sunday and
asked his German colleague for support for Italy’s European
Investment Bank candidate and former economy minister Daniele
Franco.

Giorgetti said Franco was a “well-prepared technocrat free of
political influence”.

Premier Giorgia Meloni also stressed that Franco was not backed
by any particular political party.

Italy recently confirmed its candidacy of former economy
minister Franco to lead the EIB replacing Germany’s Werner Hoyer
whose term has ended.

Franco, 70, is a former deputy director general of the Bank of
Italy and head of the general accounting office who served as
Mario Draghi’s economy minister from 2021 to 2022.

Speaking after talks between Giorgetti and Franco on August 30,
economy ministry sources said the Italian government is
convinced of the validity of Franco’s bid and has seen a
consensus for him growing in European circles in the last few
weeks. (ANSA).
