G20 Summit LIVE: Amid the ongoing G20 Summit, global leaders, without naming Russia, decried the use of force in Ukraine for territorial gain in a summit statement on Saturday, reported AFP.

Referencing the ‘war in Ukraine’, the New Delhi Leaders Summit Declaration said that ‘all states’ should ‘refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state’.

Unlike in a G20 statement in Bali last year, there was no explicit reference to Russia in the Delhi Declaration. In 2022, a UN resolution condemned in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Read More

The G20 Leaders’ Declaration released on Saturday stresses on the need for a diversified, sustainable, and responsible supply chain for energy transition including for critical minerals.

The declaration said that the G20 countries support strong international and national enabling environments to foster innovation, voluntary and mutually agreed technology transfer, and access to low-cost financing.

It said that the member countries “support reliable, diversified, sustainable and responsible supply chains for energy transitions, including for critical minerals and materials beneficiated at source, semiconductors and technologies.” Read More

G20 Summit LIVE: India on Saturday announced the launch of the Global Biofuel Alliance and urged G20 nations to join the initiative with a plea to take ethanol blending with petrol globally to 20 per cent.

Speaking at the G20 Summit session on ‘One Earth’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also proposed launching the ‘G20 Satellite Mission for Environment and Climate Observation’ and urged leaders to commence work on the ‘Green Credit Initiative’.

“Today, the need of the hour is that all countries should work together in the field of fuel blending. Our proposal is to take an initiative at a global-level to take ethanol blending in petrol up to 20 per cent,” he said.

“Or alternatively, we could work on developing another blending mix for the greater global good, one that ensures a stable energy supply while also contributing to climate security,” Modi said at the session attended by US President Joe Biden, Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak among others.

The prime minister said energy transition is a significant need of the 21st century world considering the challenge of climate change. (PTI)

G20 Summit LIVE: “I would draw your attention to paragraphs 74 and 75 of the leaders’ declaration. 75 speaks about the role of the FATF because clearly, the financing of terrorism is a very strong concern which the entire international community, not just the G 20 shares. The 74 deals with illicit trafficking and diversion of small arms and light weapons. So I think these are concerns. So within the G 20, I think these conversations are quite helpful, but obviously, in terms of policy action, they will be carried into their mechanisms and forums which focus on the issue.”

“Through the hard work of our teams, and through the cooperation of you all, we have reached agreement on the New Delhi G20 Leaders Summit Declaration. I propose that we adopt this New Delhi Leaders Declaration,” Modi said, addressing his counterparts at a session.

G20 Summit LIVE: South Africa expects significant backing from the G20 Summit towards resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, said Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the South African president, in New Delhi on Saturday. Magwenya also highlighted strong commitments received by South Africa from developed nations regarding climate change efforts.

G20 Summit LIVE: The African Union (AU), which represents 55 member states, on Saturday joined the G20 as a permanent member, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who kicked off the two-day G20 leaders’ Summit here, describing India’s G20 presidency as a symbol of inclusiveness.

At the opening session of the summit, AU Chair Azali Assoumani marked the Union’s entry as a permanent member of G20, on Modi’s invitation.

In his opening remark, Modi called for a collective approach to resolving the challenges facing the world today and emphasised on the need to restore mutual faith that has been lost due to war. G20 Summit LIVE: Ahead of the summit, officials of the G20 countries were engaged in intense deliberations over finding a consensus on the New Delhi declaration. The most contentious part of the final declaration was the position on Russia-Ukraine war. 

As China and Russia are also members of G20, they were against any hard positions on the Russia-Ukraine war. Earlier, any position from Russia-Ukraine was omitted from the draft New Delhi declaration and later wordings of the position were changed with which all members were comfortable.
