Ahead of its world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, Amazon Studios has dropped the first batch of Expats photos from the upcoming limited drama, which hails from The Farewell filmmaker Lulu Wang.

The series will screen its penultimate episode at TIFF this Friday, September 8. It will be available for streaming sometime in early 2024 on Prime Video.

The photos provided a glimpse of its ensemble cast led by Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, who also serves as an executive producer. This marks Kidman’s latest collaboration with Amazon after previously working together on the Nine Perfect Strangers series.

What to expect in The Expats?

“Set against the vibrant and tumultuous tapestry of 2014 Hong Kong, Expats centers on three American women – Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy – whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy,” reads the synopsis. “The series interrogates privilege and explores what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred.”

Expats is written, directed and created by Wang, based on Janice Y. K. Lee’s internationally bestselling novel The Expatriates. Joining Kidman are Sarayu Blue (Never Have I Ever), Ji-young Yoo (Moxie), Brian Tee (Chicago Med), Jack Huston (Fargo), newcomer Tiana Gowen, Bodhi del Rosario (Station 19), Valarie Yu (Lucifer), Amelyn Pardenilla, Ruby Ruiz, and more.

Executive producers are Wang, Daniele Melia, Per Saari, Alice Bell, Theresa Park, and Stan Wlodkowski. The series is also co-written by Park, Bell, Lee, Vera Miao, and Gursimran Sandhu.
