Hausa community in Anambra resolves leadership crisis

Hausa community in Anambra State has ended the leadership tussle over who becomes the Sarkin Hausawa Amawbia, nine years after.

Trouble started following the death of the late Hausawa Amawbia, who was issued with a certificate of recognition by the late traditional ruler of Anawbia, Igwe Michael Okoye, in 2014.

It was gathered that moves by the son of the late Hausawa Amawbia, Alhaji Mahmud Sani, to succeed his father, who died in June 2014, was allegedly frustrated by the Sarkin Hausawa Awka Community, Alhaji Haruna, who backed Alhaji Haruna Adamu’s ambition.

It was gathered that Adamu and his supporters wrote petitions to police stations, including the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), challenging the emergence of Sani in court.

Sani felt aggrieved and went to an Awka High Court, presided over by Justice Ike Ogu against the Sarkin Hausawa Awka community, Alhaji Garba Haruna (first defendant) and Alhaji   Haruna Adamu in a civil suit.

In his verdict, Justice Ogu issued an order declaring that the first defendant has no locus standi to meddle in the activities of the plaintiff, given the fact that Awka community and Amawbia community are two different communities.

Ogu also gave an order of perpetual injunction restraining the second defendant from parading himself as the Hausawa Amawbia.

He also granted the prayer for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the 1st and 2nd defendants, by themselves, servants, or privies from meddling in the activities of the plaintiff as Sarkin Hausawa Amawbia Community, in addition to an award of the sum of N200,000 against the defendants as costs.

Speaking at an event to mark the victory of the court at Eke Oyibo Amawbia Market, the President of the market, Dan Nwokoye described the victory as well-deserved. Nwokoye pointed out that the emergence of Sani as the new Sarkin Amawbia signposts new development in the leadership of the market and indigenes of Amawbia in the business community.
