Clearly listening to calls from fans for more of Final Fantasy XVI’s dark fantasy world and fast-paced combat, Square Enix has revealed that its hit action RPG will be receiving two paid story DLC installments along with a PC port. The announcement came from producer Naoki Yoshida, who spearheaded the project throughout Final Fantasy XVI’s lengthy development process.
What will be in the FFXVI PC version?
As reported by Polygon, Yoshida’s announcement came as part of a Final Fantasy panel at the PAX West gaming convention over the weekend. In the clip, which was posted to the official Final Fantasy XVI Twitter account, Yoshida thanks players for supporting the game and goes over new cosmetic customization options included in the latest patch before revealing the big news. Stating that it was clear players wanted to see more of Final Fantasy XVI’s world of Valisthea, Yoshida announced that the development team had begun work on two paid story DLC installments for the game.
Finally confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming, the short message from Yoshida also revealed the existence of a PC port of Final Fantasy XVI. Players had long suspected that Square Enix’s action RPG would eventually make its way to desktops after the Final Fantasy XVI reveal trailer from the 2020 PlayStation 5 showcase listed PC among the game’s supported platforms. Having seemingly revealed the PC port’s existence far ahead of schedule, Square Enix quickly removed any mention of it from existing and future marketing materials for the game.
Despite heavy skepticism from many long-time franchise fans when Final Fantasy XVI’s combat system and gameplay were shown to be closer to titles like Devil May Cry than previous Final Fantasy games, the game proved to be a critical and commercial success. Gamers hoping to dive back into the world of Final Fantasy XVI on their PlayStation 5 or explore it for the first time on PC still have a bit of a wait, though. While Yoshida’s video closes with a promise that more information about both the DLC and PC port will come before the end of the year, no release date for either was provided.
