LONDON, March 20 (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Theresa May would have to put a long delay to Brexit to parliament if that is what the European Union offer in talks this week, the leader of House of Commons Andrea Leadsom said on Wednesday.

“The prime minister is determined to make it a short extension… so I would doubt it would be a 9 month extension. If that’s what the EU come back with, then I would imagine the prime minister would have to come back and put that to parliament,” Leadsom told LBC Radio.

Leadsom said that while May could request an extension, she would not be able to unilaterally determine its length.

“She can’t insist on a particular timeline… It will be a conversation that she has with all EU 27 members.” (Reporting by Alistair Smout. Editing by Andrew MacAskill)
