Gabonese military officers said that they had seized control of the central African country on Wednesday morning, hours after the electoral commission declared long-serving president Ali Bongo winner of Saturday’s contentious elections.
“In the name of the Gabonese people . . . we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” the officers, who claimed to represent all of the oil rich country’s security and defence units, said on domestic television on Wednesday morning.
The officers, who have not named their junta, said the election results were annulled, all borders closed and state institutions dissolved.
The electoral commission had earlier said that Bongo won 64.27 per cent of the vote, clinching a third term in power.
