NEW DELHI: Finally, moving ahead with the ambitious Vande Bharat trains with sleeper facility, Russian rolling-stock major TMH on Monday deposited Rs 200 crore as performance bank guarantee (PBG) to the railways. This has paved the way for the railways to sign a manufacturing cum maintenance agreement with TMH as technology partner for manufacturing of 120 such trains.
The government targets to roll out the first prototype of the Vande Bharat train with sleeper coach by next March, barely months before the Lok Sabha polls.
The Russian major TMH has formed a joint venture with railway PSU, RVNL.
Another consortium of central PSU, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and Titagarh Wagons (TWL) has bagged the tender for manufacturing of 80 such Vande Bharat trains and this consortium is likely to produce the first train.
These trains will cater to the long distance and overnight journey, and these may be deployed on Rajdhani routes.
As per the tender condition, the special purpose vehicle (SPV) set up by TMH and RVNL will manufacture 120 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets within the stipulated time frame and will also be running maintenance services for 35 years.
Currently, the Vande Bharat trains with seating facilities are being produced at the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai.
