The main objective of the summit is policy cooperation among member countries to achieve global economic stability and long-term growth as well as to push for financial regulations that lower risks and help to avoid future financial crises. The G20 began as a conference of finance ministers and central bank governors in 1999. The first G20 leaders’ meeting of state and government was held in Washington, DC in 2008.
