The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is currently undertaking an investigation into the safety of gas hobs, supplied by Apelson Appliances UK Ltd, Buy It Direct Ltd, Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, Kingfisher International Products Ltd, Lancaster Holdings Ltd, Maurice Lay Distributors Ltd, Product Care Trading Ltd, Stax Trade Centres Ltd and The Wright Buy Ltd.
This issue came to light following an explosion at a caravan park in April this year, where a person suffered serious burns. The investigation involves the elbow joints that connect the product to the gas supply. On specific gas hobs supplied by these businesses, there is a potential cause of a risk of a gas leak.
In July 2023, OPSS issued Suspension Notices to stop the supply of the affected models of gas hobs. The businesses involved have agreed to undertake a corrective action programme that will involve the replacement of the faulty elbow joint and will be contacting those affected to arrange corrective action.
Given the nature and scale of the risks involved, which is highest in mobile premises using LPG, OPSS is updating its safety advice as follows:
Owners and consumers in domestic premises should continue to be vigilant. If they smell gas or are concerned that their product poses a risk, they should contact the National Gas Emergency Helpline for their area (0800 111 999 in England, Wales and Scotland, and 0800 002 001 in Northern Ireland) or a Gas Safe registered installer.
The affected models are listed on the OPSS Product Recalls and Alerts pages.
