MASSILLON − The majority owner of Shearer’s Foods is considering a sale valued at more than $3 billion, according to Reuters.

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, which bought a majority share of the snack food company in 2015, declined to comment when contacted by The Canton Repository. A message to Shearer’s Foods was not returned.

The news agency, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter, reported that the pension group is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. on an auction. Shearer’s management and the Chicago-based private equity firm Wind Point Partners also own stakes in the company.

Shearer’s Foods traces its roots to a family grocery store that opened in the early 1900s in Canton. Jack and Rosemary Shearer and their sons, Bob and Tom, founded the snack distribution company in 1974 that now has about a dozen manufacturing plants across the nation.

According to the company website, “Shearer’s is the largest supplier of private brand salty snacks and the second-largest supplier of private brand cookies and crackers in North America.”
