Tokyo, August 10, 2023 – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) received the “Award By The Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association” at the 53rd Machine Design Award IDEA sponsored by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd., for its compact CO2 capture system “CO2MPACT™” developed for decarbonization of a wide range of industries. The awards ceremony was held on July 27 at the KEIDANREN KAIKAN in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

The Machine Design Award IDEA was established by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd. in 1970, now in its 53rd year, with patronage of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, with support from the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and its industry associations. The award is to promote and develop Japanese industrial products with excellent design including functions and performance. This year, a total of 18 winning products were selected from 31 entries.

The CO2MPACT™ is a compact CO2 capture system that can be promptly adapted to small scale industrial facilities by modularizing a versatile standard design based on the knowledge of the world’s top share of CO2 capture technology gained over 30 years of development. MHI received praise for the development concept that contributes to CO2 reduction in a wide range of industrial fields, the labor and work-saving features of operation and maintenance through the installation of operational support services such as automatic operation and remote monitoring system, and the design that embodies the ease of operation through optimal operation by this award.

CO2MPACT™ also achieved the “Awards for Excellence” at the 2022 Nikkei Excellent Products and Services Awards (Note1) in January 2023, sponsored by Nikkei Inc. In February 2022, the Company’s CO2 capture technology of KS-21™ and Advanced KMCDR Process™ received the METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) Minister’s Award(Note2) at the 2021 Outstanding Energy-Efficient and Decarbonizing Industrial Machinery & Systems Awards, sponsored by The Japan Machinery Federation. This is the third external award that MHI’s CO2 capture system and technologies have received in the past two years. The Company will continue to enhance its presence and expand CO2MPACT™ to the whole world, aiming to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality.

MHI Group aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, and the Company is now undertaking strategic initiatives toward decarbonizing the energy supply side. Establishing a CO2 solutions ecosystem that links diverse carbon emission sources with solutions for storage and utilization is a core aspect of this initiative. MHI Group will utilize its proprietary CO2 capture technology to strengthen its CCUS (Carbon dioxide Capture, Utilization and Storage) business, contribute as a solution provider to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions on a worldwide scale, and further pursue development of solutions that contribute to the protection of the environment.

About MHI Group’s CO2 capture technologies

MHI has been developing the KM CDR Process™ (Kansai Mitsubishi Carbon Dioxide Recovery Process) and Advanced KM CDR Process™ in collaboration with Kansai Electric Power since 1990. As of August 2023, the Company has delivered 15 plants adopting the KM CDR Process™, and three more are currently under construction. The Advanced KM CDR Process™ uses KS-21™, which incorporates technological improvements over the amine-based KS-1™ solvent adopted at all 15 of the commercial CO2 capture plants MHI has delivered to date. The advanced version offers superior regeneration efficiency and lower deterioration than the KS-1™, and it has been verified to provide excellent energy saving performance, reduce operating costs, and result in low amine emissions.
