The Nigeria Legion has launched the ‘five million salute’ – a fund-raising Art project – for the men and women of the Legion.
The project is to support the housing and business schemes of the veterans to raise their self-dignity.
Earlier in his speech, Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Lagos State chapter, Akeem Olawale Wolimoh, urged governments, private sector and every compassionate Nigerian to rise in unity and support the Nigeria Legion.
He also called for helping hands to the heroes who have done so much by providing them with care and dignity.
Wolimoh, who lamented the countless challenges the veterans face, even after retiring from active service, said those that valiantly fought for peace and protected the country’s sovereignty often find themselves in the shadows, neglected and forgotten.
He said: “Today, we gather here to change that narrative. We stand united to extend our heartfelt gratitude and support to the Nigerian Legion.”
Over the years, our veterans have faced numerous battles. They fought in the blistering heat of the desert, the impenetrable jungles, and the treacherous hills, enduring countless sleepless nights and witnessing horrors that no human should ever bear witness to. They have undoubtedly left behind a part of themselves on those battlefields, forever etched in the annals of our great nation’s history.”
He said Nigerians must remember that the value of a nation is not solely determined by its technological advancement or economic wealth, but the way it treats its citizens, particularly those who selflessly defended its sovereignty.
“To our veterans, I want to express my deepest gratitude and admiration for your unwavering bravery, courage and sacrifice. Your service exemplifies the very best of what it means to be Nigerians. Today, we pledge to stand by your side, to fight for your rights, and to honour your noble service,” he added.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Lagos State, Oloruntoyin Atekoja, represented by Mrs. Bisi Omojare, said she was impressed when the news of using arts to remember this heroes came to her department and that her ministry may not give them the cash but supporting the ‘five million salute’ by the use of arts and culture.
