Yellowjackets executive producer Karyn Kusama teased how the Showtime series’ third season will handle the teenagers’ re-entry into the world.

Kusama — who also directed the pilot and season two finale of the series — teased the third season’s plot on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast.

“I’ve been so excited by this,” she said. “The concept of that immediate aftermath of re-entry into the world, to me, there’s a whole season worth of material there. And the fact that this is such a long game that each of these characters is facing, in terms of reorienting themselves to whatever normalcy is supposed to be. I’m sure we’re going to learn that their normal is a lot different than our normal… There’s a lot that needs to be figured out between Season 2 and Season 3.”

Yellowjackets is bringing the girls home

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets premiered on Showtime in November 2021. The series follows a high school girls’ soccer team in 1996 that boards a plane headed to Seattle, only to crash land in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. In an effort to stay alive, the survivors are driven to cannibalism and cult-like activities.

A portion of Yellowjackets is also set in 2021 and follows a handful of the survivors 25 years after the crash. This means viewers already have some idea of who makes it out of the wilderness alive. The second season, which aired in 2023, also briefly depicted the survivors’ first moments back in civilization.

The third season of Yellowjackets currently does not have a release date, as production on the series has shut down due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes. The strikes call for fair pay for writers and actors, protection against A.I., and more.
