Persecution’: Watch Trump’s reaction after leaving DC court after arrest

Donald Trump pleaded “not guilty” in court on Thursday after being arrested and arraigned for conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election, the latest in his third – and potentially most serious – criminal case.

The former president was indicted Monday on four charges as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the alleged conspiracy and the 6 January Capitol riot. The indictment also described six unnamed co-conspirators, though observers have credibly guessed most of their identities.

The former president has railed against the indictment, calling for the “fake” case to be moved out of Washington DC where he claims it is “IMPOSSIBLE to get a fair trial”.

The case has been assigned to US district judge Tanya Chutkan, a Barack Obama appointee. The next hearing is scheduled for 28 August.

On Friday, Mr Trump also pleaded “not guilty” to additional charges from the superseding indictment in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case. He also signed a waiver saying he would not be appearing at his next court date in Florida on Thursday.

Who are Trump’s six alleged co-conspirators?

A grand jury, which has spent months hearing evidence in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation, returned a federal indictment on Tuesday 1 August.

The former president was charged with four counts: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

Mr Trump was arraigned in DC on Thursday and pleaded not guilty.

While the former president is the only person charged, the indictment refers to six co-conspirators who worked with him to try to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Watch: Donald Trump’s motorcade blocked by herd of goats

Donald Trump’s motorcade was blocked by a herd of rogue goats upon return to his New Jersey golf club following his court appearance on Thursday 3 August. Aerial footage shows the animals gathering around two black SUVs as they attempted to drive down the road. Mr Trump purchased the 506-acre estate in 2002, before turning it into a golf course and country club. It is registered as a working farm due to the occasional appearance of goats. The former president arrived back after he pleaded not guilty in a Washington DC court after being arrested and arraigned for conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Federal judge wants Giuliani to clarify ‘incongruous’ and ‘puzzling’ court filing

A federal judge has asked Rudy Giuliani to clarify his “seemingly incongruous and certainly puzzling caveats” in a recent filing in which he appears to admit he made false and defamatory statements about two Georgia election workers in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

But Mr Giuliani and his attorney have argued that the extremely carefully worded filing – which attempts to move the case along to avoid revealing more evidence – is not an admission.
