COMPLETE BIG WEST SPRING ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM SELECTIONS

SAN LUIS OBISPO – With the Mustang men’s and women’s track and field teams collecting half of the Cal Poly Athletics Department’s 2023 Big West Spring All-Academic Team awards, 58 Mustangs were honored by the conference Thursday afternoon.

In order to qualify for selection, student-athletes (excluding true freshmen and first-year transfers) had to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA through the most recent academic term while also competing in at least 50 percent of their program’s competitions.

The complete listing of Cal Poly’s 58 Big West Spring All-Academic Team honorees is below.

Among Cal Poly’s track and field selections were three student-athletes that also captured individual titles during May’s Big West Championship in seniors Mathis Bresko (pole vault) and Amaya Lopez-Fuller (discus) and junior Anthony Guerra (3,000-meter steeplechase). Additionally, graduate student John Bennett (distance events) was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America first team on Wednesday while, during the course of the season, senior Shelby Daniele broke the program record for the indoor 200 meters and junior Jadyn Snaer set a new indoor 60-meter dash mark.

Capturing the Big West Championship title in April and advancing to the NCAA Regionals, Cal Poly’s women’s golf program earned three all-academic honors in seniors Jensen Jalufka and Nicole Neale and junior Kamille Dimayuga. Cal Poly’s men’s program, which finished third at the Big West Championship, picked up two honors in senior Joseph Zambri and junior Baron Szeto.

Big West Championship runners-up in April, the Mustang women’s tennis program was represented by graduate student Kim Bhunu and seniors Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette. Cal Poly’s men’s tennis team garnered five further selections – 71 percent of its eligible roster.

Also Big West Championship runners-up, Cal Poly’s beach volleyball program earned four selections, including all-conference first team honorees Piper Ferch and Piper Naess.

Highlighted by sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements – the leading hitter in program history and a two-time NFCA All-Region honoree – the Mustang softball team produced seven selections, one shy of the program record set last spring. Thursday’s announcement marked the third time in the last five seasons that Cal Poly’s softball program has earned seven-plus selections.

The Cal Poly baseball program was represented by five selections, highlighted by All-Big West second team honoree and sophomore catcher Ryan Stafford.
