Welsh Labour MP Carolyn Harris is the final guest on Sophy Ridge on Sunday.

Ms Harris, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Menopause, says it’s important to talk about the subject more as it affects 51% of the population.

She says women are quitting working and walking away from marriages due issues brought about by the menopause.

Ms Harris also says it can lead to an increase in domestic violence and suicide.

“It’s all down to a lack of services,” she says. “It’s so easily remedied.”

The MP talks about her experience of going through the menopause.

“I thought in 2010 I was having a nervous breakdown. I ended up on anti-depressants, stayed on them for eight years, believed I had mental health problems.”

Ms Harris says she “didn’t acknowledge” she was menopausal and came up with excuses not to venture out of her “safe zone”.

Since “taking ownership” of her menopause she has been “a different person,” she adds.

Ms Harris is calling for a “re-education” around use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drugs, saying she felt “20 years younger” when she began taking them.
