An unlikely twist of fate threw Ross McMahon and Laura Modi into the same competitive arena. From Monaghan, McMahon, 58, has a long career in the food industry, working in the poultry business and then for Campbell Bewley before buying a milk formula facility in the English Lake District for £1 from Heinz, saving 88 jobs in the small rural town of Kendal in Cumbria.
Kendal Nutricare, the company that McMahon now runs with his sons Will and Dylan, is busy finalising a £30 million (€34 million) expansion at the once doomed site, doubling capacity, and has added almost 100 jobs to the town.
McMahon spent the week before last touring Ireland, visiting co-ops and IDA-owned sites as he scoped out a location for a
