Across Teesside, there are many small, independent businesses selling all kinds of products.

From food and drink stores to dog groomers and hairdressers, you can find whatever you’re after in our region. Saturday, December 2 is Small Business Saturday – a nationwide campaign to highlight the success of small businesses.

It also aims to encourage residents to ‘shop local’ and support the independent businesses in their area. Over the time the campaign has been running in the UK, it has engaged millions and seen billions spent with small businesses on Small Business Saturday, according to the official campaign website.

We asked locals on Facebook to shout out their favourite independently-owned stores and savvy local entrepreneurs. Here are six small businesses that got a mention from more than one Teessider:

Smith’s Butchers

Address: 263a Acklam Rd, Middlesbrough TS5 7BP

Smith’s Butchers, on Acklam Road, Middlesbrough is a firm-favourite of Teessiders. It was named the go-to butchers following a poll by Teesside Live earlier this year.

The independent butchers has a five-star food hygiene rating and it was opened in 2018 by Paul Smith, from Marton. Smith’s sells a wide range of meat products, including beef, lamb, pork, sausages and bacon and it is currently taking orders for whole turkeys for Christmas but it expects these to sell out by the end of the week.

Find out more about Smith’s Butchers on its website and Facebook page.
