Across Teesside, there are many small, independent businesses selling all kinds of products.
From food and drink stores to dog groomers and hairdressers, you can find whatever you’re after in our region. Saturday, December 2 is Small Business Saturday – a nationwide campaign to highlight the success of small businesses.
It also aims to encourage residents to ‘shop local’ and support the independent businesses in their area. Over the time the campaign has been running in the UK, it has engaged millions and seen billions spent with small businesses on Small Business Saturday, according to the official campaign website.
We asked locals on Facebook to shout out their favourite independently-owned stores and savvy local entrepreneurs. Here are six small businesses that got a mention from more than one Teessider:
Smith’s Butchers
Address: 263a Acklam Rd, Middlesbrough TS5 7BP
Smith’s Butchers, on Acklam Road, Middlesbrough is a firm-favourite of Teessiders. It was named the go-to butchers following a poll by Teesside Live earlier this year.
The independent butchers has a five-star food hygiene rating and it was opened in 2018 by Paul Smith, from Marton. Smith’s sells a wide range of meat products, including beef, lamb, pork, sausages and bacon and it is currently taking orders for whole turkeys for Christmas but it expects these to sell out by the end of the week.

Tag Fit UK
Tag Fit UK, based in Yarm, is run by Harry J Warrow, a fitness coach and nutrition coach with 14 years of experience. It delivers “excellence and care through fitness, nutrition, and injury rehabilitation”.
The most popular service Tag Fit UK offers is premium personal training where one to one sessions are available. Other services include individualised online coaching and corporate fitness.
One reviewer said: “My husband and I have been doing weekly PT sessions with Harry since the end of August. My husband has an illness that impacts his strength and ability to move and we wanted some help with keeping him functioning as well as possible. Harry is amazing at designing sessions that meet both of our needs, even though our needs are quite different.”

The Coffee Shed
Address: 25 High St, Normanby, Middlesbrough TS6 0NH
The Coffee Shed describes itself as a “rustic venue in the heart of Normanby serving barista coffee, tea, hot chocolate and delicious food”. It is also dog friendly and serves ‘puppicinos’.
One person who visited The Coffee Shed said it is a “lovely little venue” with “great” food and service. Another said the food was “absolutely gorgeous” and the service was “impeccable”.

Awesome Pawz
Awesome Pawz is run by Janine, based in Middlesbrough. Janine is a fully insured, DBS checked in-home pet sitter, dog groomer and dog trainer. Last month she also qualified as a canine body language specialist.
Janine has had plenty of positive reviews of her service. One person on Yell said: “Being able to leave my dogs in Janine’s capable hands when we go away takes all the stress and worry away. She is so caring and attentive to detail and always keeps us updated on what is happening back at home – I couldn’t recommend her more.”

Frydays
Address: 11 Parliament Rd, Middlesbrough TS1 4JU
This Middlesbrough fish and chips shop claims that it only uses the “freshest fish which is filleted and frozen within 4 hours of being caught at sea”. It serves traditional cod and chips as well as fish patties, fish cakes, pies, burgers and wraps.

786 Fone Repairs says it supplies and fits phone screen replacements “within 60 minutes” and it offers a pick up and drop off service. It claims to have “expert technicians” and repair technicians who are “highly qualified”.
One Facebook user reviewed the phone shop when she commented: “Brilliant service, reliable and trustworthy would definitely recommend, came to replace my charging port but was informed it didn’t need replacing just cleaning, thanks again.”
