Here are the top four stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. Round two of small business funding via the Cherokee Small Business Grant has been opened up early. This round of the program, which was originally slated for 2024, will see another $500,000 in grants awarded to small businesses around the county that have been affected by the pandemic. The application window for this round opens on April 17 at 8 a.m. and closes April 30 at noon, and eligible businesses can apply for up to $30,000 in grant funds, based on the number of staff employed. You can find the application for the grant here. The program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and is in place to help small businesses in the county that have suffered a negative economic impact from the pandemic, have no more than 500 employees, are independently owned and operated and are not dominant in their field.   2. It’s time for the Spring Healthy Kids Running Series! The race series is for children in Pre-K through 8th grade and helps promotes an active and healthy lifestyle. The first race in the series is this Sunday, and the last race is on May 14. At the end of the series, trophies will be given to the children with the most points, and all participants will receive a medal at the final race. You can register your child or make a donation to help support the cause here. The races all have a Sunday, 2 p.m. start time and are run at Cherokee Veterans Park, 7345 Cumming Highway.   3. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office has asked for the public’s help in identifying two people seen on surveillance during a suspected shoplifting on March 6. The incident took place at the Cabela’s located at 152 Northpoint Parkway in Acworth. A vehicle was also captured on video, it appears to be a dark SUV with a small, enclosed trailer attached.   4. The Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) will forgive up to $15 of your library fines in celebration of National Library Week. From April 23 – 29, head over to your local SRLS library to participate in the program, though some fees may not be eligible for forgiveness. The fines can be from the past or recent. The library system is also making several appearances during National Library Week, including Canton City Hall on April 24 for the Teen & Young Adult Job and Resources Fair and the Farm. Fresh.   • Peace, Love & Recycle: for Canton residents only, bring your items to the Public Works building at 2525 Ridge Road. Please bring help to unload any large items, and the containers you bring your items in will not be returned, so make sure to pack your recyclables in disposable containers or boxes.   • Open Gym: open to county residents at The Buzz, 7345 Cumming Highway. There is a nominal fee to play. (7 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
  • Friends of Shelter Animals Spring Yard Sale: proceeds will go to rescue groups helping animals from the Cobb County Animal Shelter and other animal rescue efforts. There will be collectibles, furniture, household items, pictures, jewelry, pet supplies, clothing and more. You can also bring donations of unopened, unexpired dog and cat food. The yard sale will be held at 973 Duncan Terrace, at the north end of Harmony of the Lakes – off Highway 140. (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
  • Open Pickleball Play: open to county residents at The Buzz, 7345 Cumming Highway. There is a nominal fee to play. (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
  • Atypical Vegan N More Market: grab a bite to eat and shop local, there will be vendors with woodwork, tumblers, jewelry, soaps and more, and you can enter a free drawing while you’re at Atypical Vegan N More, 11429 Bells Ferry Road. (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
  • Beau the Reading Dog: your child can read to Beau as part of the Caring Paws Reading Education Assistance Dogs program. You can register here for the event at the Woodstock Library, 7735 Main Street. (10 – 11 a.m.)
  • Rock Wall Climbing Zone: open to county residents ages 4 and up and 40-pounds and over at The Buzz, 7345 Cumming Highway. There is a nominal fee to climb. (10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and 4 – 5 p.m.)
  • Saturday Storytime: for children of all ages, read stories, play games and work on crafts at the R.T. Jones Memorial Library, 116 Brown Industrial Parkway. Note: this will be the same storytime that was held on Tuesday. (10:30 – 11:30 a.m.)
  • Goat Yoga: enjoy yoga on The Green with Hidden Acres Animal Sanctuary. There are still tickets available, you can grab yours here. The Green is located at 225 Reformation Parkway. (11 a.m. – noon)
  • Dungeon & Dragons: the monthly Dungeons & Dragons campaign is for all ages and will be held at the R.T. Jones Memorial Library, 116 Brown Industrial Parkway. You can register here, but please note, the program may be too advanced for the younger set. (2 – 5 p.m.)
  • Fire + The Knife: there’s live music tonight at Riverstone Corner Bistro, 151 Reinhardt College Parkway. (7 – 9 p.m.)
  • Mark Miller: the artist will be playing at J. Michael’s Prime tonight, 110 Mountain Vista Boulevard. (7 – 9 p.m.)
  • Malcolm Little: head over to C’est la Vie for live music tonight, 361 E. Main Street. (7:30 – 9:30 p.m.)
  • ATL United Match on the Big Screen: head to The Green with the crew to watch the game on the big screen, 225 Reformation Parkway. (7:30 – 10 p.m.)

  • Spring Block Party with Band Waleska: join your friends, neighbors and family for a family-friendly bike night, live show and block party. There will also be a fundraiser to help with medical expenses for Molly Willis, who was injured in a motorcycle accident.   • The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is holding its regular adoption event today. The available animals can be seen online here. Head over to the shelter when you can, a QR code posted on the front door will become active at a randomly selected time between 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday. Please scan the QR code to enter the “virtual line.” The shelter adopts on a first come, first served basis, and animals can’t be put on hold. The adoption fee includes the spay or neuter, heartworm and leukemia testing, initial vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping and more. The shelter is located at 1015 Univeter Road.
