Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:
- Another round of funding via the Cherokee Small Business Grant has been opened up early. Round two of the program, which was originally slated for 2024, will see another $500,000 in grants awarded to small businesses around the county that have been affected by the pandemic. The application window for this round opens on April 17 at 8 a.m. and closes April 30 at noon, and eligible businesses can apply for up to $30,000 in grant funds, based on the number of staff employed. You can find the application for the grant here. The program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and is in place to help small businesses in the county that have suffered a negative economic impact from the pandemic, have no more than 500 employees, are independently owned and operated and are not dominant in their field. - The Street Dog Dash 5K is coming up on April 29, and there’s still time to register, sponsor, donate or volunteer. Funds from the race will go to the Soi Dog organization to further the education about and fight against the dog meat trade in Asia. Soi Dog works with local governments throughout Asia to help create and enforce laws against the dog meat trade and creates educational and outreach programs to prevent the practice. It also rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes dogs from the meat trade. The race will be held at Etowah River Park, at 600 Brown Industrial Parkway. It is an Official AJC Peachtree Roadrace qualifying event. Pets on leashes are welcome. There will be an awards ceremony and adoption event, a live DJ and a raffle held after the race. - For rising high school juniors and seniors interested in a summer internship, you can sign up to receive information about the Cherokee Summer Internship Program. The paid, 6-week program runs from June 5 – July 14 and offers students business experience and networking skills, helps open up networking channels and provides real-world experience that can give them invaluable knowledge and confidence. - In other school news, there are a few public events coming up from the district that would make for a great spring day out and about. Etowah High School and the Pathway agriculture program are holding a plant sale at the school April 12 – 14, from 3 – 6 p.m. each day. The event flyer lists a lot of vegetables, blooming plants, herbs and foliage baskets including Begonias, Sweet Potato Vine, Tomatoes, Lavender, Lemon Balm and much more. Cherokee High School and its Pathway agriculture program are holding a plant sale at the school April 13 – 14, from 4 – 6 p.m. each day, and April 15 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event flyer for this one lists many plants, herbs, vegetables and succulents. There is a district-wide art show coming up April 28 – 30 that will showcase art from local students, displayed in Downtown Woodstock on The Event Green and the Reeves House. You can find more information about the show at the links, the event is free. (CCSD April Newsletter and CCSD News)
- We have only two more weeks before the burn ban hits our area. If you have yard debris to get rid of or some pruning to take care of, now’s a good time. The annual burn ban runs from May 1 – September 30. You should always check the conditions on the day you will be burning, there have been a couple days recently where the conditions were not suitable for burning due to low relative humidity and strong winds. You can check online here or call the Georgia Forestry Commission at 877-652-2876. You do not need a permit for yard debris or recreational fires, but permits are required for bonfires and land clearing fires. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services)
